Wet vs dry dog food I was always told wet food is not good but is it actually better?

I was asking questions yesterday about my dog having crystals in her urine yesterday and someone recommended wet food instead of dry. I looked up the Canidae wet food and noticed that the protein content is only 9% in the wet food where with the dry it is 23%. Does anyone know why? Is feeding wet actually better like they say it is for cats?
Thanks

I’ve heard that wet food is better than dry food. I try to give my dogs wet food a couple times a week (one of my dog’s has a real sensitive stomach so her stool tends to get really loose on wet food). I also like the dehydrated food that you add water to, such as embark. The water in wet food will help lower the risk of crystals in your dogs urine. I would recommend mixing the wet food in with her dry food, so she still gets the additional protein. You can also try giving her a cranberry powder supplement to reduce the risk of UTI’s or a lot of dry dog foods contain cranberry in them.
I feed my JR and two border collies on dry food. This is becasue that way you dont have to give them any additional feed as the dry food contains all the right things for a balanced diet. The hardness of the dry food also helps keep their teeth cleaner. Constant wet food can give dog’s diahorrea..so thats not a good idea:). Suggestion mix the wet and dry food together!!
My dog will only eat wet food. When I adopted her the shelter gave me a bag of dry food and said that this is what she eats. I could not get her to eat it. Finally on the second day I mixed a cup of it with 1/2 can of wet food. She ate all of the wet food and licked each nugget of dry food and dropped it on the floor.
I talked with the vet and she said that wet food is not bad, but I should be consistent with the brand that I choose. Also I should give her some hard treats (dried chicken jerky, dog biscuits, etc.) and some rawhide to keep her teeth clean.
I’ve been doing this for the past couple of years and she is as happy as can be.
Because the moisture content in the wet food is so high (Usually around 70% or more, where dry is about 12%). More moisture than protein. Doesn’t really tell you much about the amount of protein in the food. I wish they would publish a second analysis that ignores the moisture content–would make it easier to sort out, wouldn’t it?
I don’t know if wet is better than dry with your dog’s health issue or not.
I was always told that the wet was bad for there teeth… The dry helps keep some plaque off there teeth because it’s hard(along with bones)
I mix the wet and the dry… The dogs like it… Dogs love wet dog food (don’t know why), but the vet said it was fine because the dry will help their teeth and they get the treat of the wet food…
Just use a good brand of wet and dry….
i only feed my dog and cat dry food but will give my cat chicken or steak or real meat when its made for dinner my cat loves that and knows when its being made. i know that you will go through wet food faster than dry cause you get more dry than wet. i don’t know if this is true or not but. my cousins black cat is fat now cause my aunt feeds her wet food a can a day half for breakfast and half for dinner. that’s just my conclusion that wet food will make a pet fat i think wet food does require more walking for dogs cause i think it has more fat
I adoped my dog a little over one year ago. A 2 year old Gr. shep from the shelter. The lady at the adoption place told me dry food. This is the first dog that I’ve ever had that is strictly on a dry diet. The dog is happy no health issues. In the past I did a mix of both. But I do listen to the experts. My vet is happy with the dog’s progress.
She first came here and had bathroom issues. But in a few weeks they cleared up. COuld have been stress from moving to a house from a shetler. Could have been the change in diet. That was her only real issue in digestive areas.
Good luck to you.
dry is better for their teeth..wet will give them bad breath and rot their teeth if used all the time..you will have to brush your dogs teeth at least twice a day…
